The Eliza Bryant Ladies Spa Concluding Post
Before I started doing this service opportunity, I had no idea that I was going to be in it. I had registered late for the project because I was in Ireland when registering began. When I realized that everyday I was expected to paint old ladies' nails I was unsure if this was fit for me. After I went to service a couple of times, I realized that it was not about just painting their nails, but it was about providing them with someone to talk to outside of the home whether it be about how old I was, or how their did things when they were my age, or even how their day was going. All they wanted was good conversation with people outside of Eliza Bryant's Retirement home. After a couple more trips to the spa, I was able to realize that my group of workers and they were not that much different. The only difference was that they were from another time period than us. They spoke of the times they were in college and they would kid around with each other as we do now. For big service project, my group decided to create a typing lab for residents at Eliza Bryant. We were able to get key boards that were easy to type on for beginners and the keys were very visible because they were bright yellow and had enlarged printed letters and numbers on them. Since Eliza Bryant has patients who are from a different generation, this project was kind of a way to get them into going on the computer and becoming familiar with how it works. Only time will tell if the typing lab becomes very successful and residents keep up with the exercises available to them. Overall this was a special opportunity for me and I'm glad the chips fell the way they did because I gained many life lessons and heard many life stories from the residents of Eliza Bryant's Retirement Home.
Net Neutrality vs. Internet Freedom
When asked the question, what is the difference between Net Neutrality and Internet Freedom, I feel the need to break down both of the titles. Net Neutrality is when Internet Service Providers put restrictions on certain websites and content so that consumers are unable to have access to them. The neutral part of Net Neutrality is saying that all internet providers restrict the same content as the others so that they are not being unfair to consumers. Internet Freedom which is also known as Internet Censorship, is when The Government or consumer has the ability to restrict certain content. For example, China's government restricts social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Another example could be how a parent puts "parental control" on certain content on their computer so their child is unable to see it. My view on both Net Neutrality and Internet Freedom is that Internet Freedom is a term more fit for the government and Net Neutrality is something that internet companies use for their consumers. I feel that Internet Freedom is something that consumers pay their internet providers for and that they should be allowed to access what they want to an extent that keeps people safe. If a person is accessing a site that has an ill motive to it against our country than it should be restricted. Other than content like that, I see no reason for the government to restrict us from social networking sites like China has done to their citizens.
